I agree more or less (or fewer) with Fry

Stephen Fry Kinetic Typography - Language from Matthew Rogers on Vimeo.

I'm with Stephen on this one.

I'm with him, most of the way. However, as a self-confessed apostrophe advocate, I'm probably one of those who he is daming to Hades... sigh.

SMW - The issue isn't so much the correct use of apostrophes ... Lord knows I'm a stickler for that too. It's more the case that the sorts of people who whinge loudest and longest about it don't ever produce anything with any joy in it. It's rather like one of those soul-destroying reality TV judges who have been famous for 5 minutes or who had a mediocre career themselves but now consider themselves to be a leading authority. Language changes and evolves and we can't stifle that. If we do, we reduce it to mere utility. I love turning nouns into verbs and adjectives, I really cocking do. And while a misplaced apostrophe may make me twitch a little, I also enjoy the secret smugness of knowing that the apple's on display don't really belong to someone called Apple.
