Trivia Porn and Number Whores

The very amiable Mr John Soanes - a man who puts me in mind of the bastard offspring of Chewbacca and Oscar Wilde - emailed me this morning. He pointed me in the direction of David Hepworth's blog in which the ageing Hepster talks about authors checking their popularity by way of the rankings on Amazon. It's not very scientific but it can be good for the ego. So I took a sneaky look and was stunned and delighted to see that, according to them, J-UT is now the 9,176th most popular book in their list. Just a week or so ago, it was somewhere around the 500,000 mark and when it first appeared on Amazon, it was somewhere up in the millions and slightly less popular than Do your own vasectomy or The Joy of Ants. I now find myself checking every few hours. I've become a Number Whore.

I've had some more reviews, all of them very kind. My favourite so far was in the free London Lite paper, which has a staggering circulation of 800,000 and is passed out to commuters in the evening. Admittedly, most of these people are tired, desperate to get home or drunk but it is read by a goodly number of them. The reviewer, a chap called Jonathan Carter called the book 'Trivia Porn'. I rather like that. I may have to use it as a cover quote if there's ever a Book 2.

Too funny.

Note to self: continue to reside in the hall of mirrors. God help you if Stevyn can actually describe you...

Hope your book continues to number soar to the gratification of the number whore.

Debby - To be fair, I do meet Mr Soanes on a semi-regular basis. People like your good self I know only from the words you type and a small postage-stamp sized photo ... which may not actually be you! You could be a 6ft tall Italian Contessa with one leg for all I know. That's the joy of Bloggernyms - anonymity. Once you meet me, howver, (as John has discovered) you're fair game!

Dammit! I knew it would be a mistake to start checking my ratings. On the day of publication I've slipped down to 11,588!
