Pipped at the Post! Torture for the Pygmy Love Queen!

Forget the Grammys, Brits and the Tonys, the BAFTAs and Rorys, the Razzies, the Oscars and even the Woodys (the so-called porn Oscars) ... the award that gives me the greatest pleasure every year is The Bookseller's Diagram Prize for Oddest Title of the Year. Instigated in 1978 at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the BDPFOTOTY* is hard-fought for every year ... and 2008 is no exception.

And the winners are (in reverse order) ...

6th Place - People who Mattered in Southend and Beyond: From King Canute to Dr Feelgood.

5th Place - How to Write a How to Write Book.

4th Place - Are Women Human? And Other International Dialogues

3rd Place - Cheese Problems Solved.

Brave runner-up was I Was Tortured By the Pygmy Love Queen (My personal favourite).

But the winner ... with 2,870 online votes is ... If You Want Closure in Your Relationship, Start With Your Legs. A self-help book you don't even need to open maybe!

Previous winners include Bombproof Your Horse, People Who Don't Know They're Dead, Greek Rural Postmen - Their Cancellation Numbers, The Big Book of Lesbian Horse Stories and the epic Highlights in the History of Concrete.

This year marks the award's 30th birthday and Aurum Press are commemorating the event with a book. How to Avoid Huge Ships and Other Implausibly Titled Books will be out in September. You can pre-order it from Amazon here.

Another great little book, if you can find it, is Bizarre Books by Russell Ash and Brian Lake (Pavilion 1998). It showcases such gems as Ice Cream for Small Plants, Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun, A new General Theory of the Teeth in Wheels, The Man with the Iron Eyebrows and the excellently named Cocktugs.

*They have to come up with a better name than this. I'd suggest the Oddies but Bill would probably be the only entrant. And would win.
