Tongue Thai'd

Here's a great little story I heard today ...

When the BBC's John Simpson started out as a journalist in the BBC radio newsroom, he became involved in a discussion about how newsreaders should pronounce the name of a bombed village in Thailand called Phuoc Me without offending the sensibilities of the nation. After much soul-searching and disagreement, they decided that none of the alternative pronunciations were suitable. Therefore, so it was decided to use the name of a neighbouring village instead.

The next village was called Ban Me Tuat.
