A Question of Class

Here’s a handy little memory trick you can use to remember the classification of species. King Philip came over from Greece singing songs. The first letter of each word equals the first letter of Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species, Sub‑species.

Using the African Wild Cat as an example, we get ...

King (Kingdom) Animalia
Philip (Phylum) Chordata (sub-phylum Vertebrata)
Came (Class) Mammalia
Over (Order) Carnivora
From (Family) Felidae
Greece (Genus) Felis
Singing (Species) Felis Silvestris
Songs (Sub‑species) Felis Silvestris Lybica

Isn't that useful? No, probably not. Unless you’re someone concerned in the identification and classification of different species that is.

Like when you’re dealing with estate agents.
